The evolution of leather surface decoration in West Bengal reflects a creative continuum linking artisanal heritage with contemporary aesthetic and commercial demands. Rooted in local craft traditions, the region has developed unique embellishment practices ranging from hand - painted motifs inspired by Bengal’s folk idioms to embossed patterning, batik resist dyeing, pyrography (burnt engraving), appliqué work, block printing and stitch–based ornamentation. These methods, especially nurtured in Santiniketan’s craft pedagogy, have shaped a distinct artistic vocabulary, while Kolkata’s leather industry has adopted mechanized embossing, laser cutting and advanced finishing technologies to meet global fashion standards. The gradual shift from purely handcrafted expression to hybrid modes of production has contributed to an expanded design language, enhancing both cultural value and commercial viability. This paper explores the transformation of these surface decoration processes, assessing their socio-cultural lineage, industrial adaptations and their growing relevance in the modern fashion ecosystem of India. Field observations reveal that traditional decorative practices continue to influence contemporary leather products not only as aesthetic markers but also as identity-driven branding narratives. However, challenges such as limited trend forecasting, insufficient technological integration in artisan clusters and lack of strategic design innovation create disconnect between craft potential and market demand. The study highlights that merging contemporary fashion sensibilities with regional artisanal decoration methods can strengthen product differentiation and global appeal. Ultimately, the presence of decorated leather goods from West Bengal in emerging fashion markets demonstrates that cultural craftsmanship, when modernized through design research, technology integration and brand storytelling, can significantly redefine India’s creative economy in both the art and fashion domains. The evolution of these techniques thus offers pathways for sustainable craft revival, premium market positioning and preservation of regional identities within global fashion trends.
